Tasmanian Art Deco and Modernism Project
Join me as I document Tasmania’s Art Deco and Modernist architecture and design. This ongoing long term project explores the fascinating part of Tasmanian history and how its shaped Tasmania.
The project is a lifelong one which I have been doing for over 10 years. When I am not editing photographs from my vast archive I am out and about exploring every corner of Tasmania for examples of Tasmanian Modernism to capture for the project. Whilst the galleries have a select example of photographs for sake of being coherent, I will update galleries regularly with new photographs, replace some photos with new edits from my archives or with new photos from recent trips. In the past galleries would often become bloated with too many photographs to view, I am taking a less is more approach! My Tasmanian Art Deco and Modernism blog is where I’ll post photographs and stories of my trips, thoughts and short essays for the project - view the blog here. For projects I have spent a great deal of time documenting I have created special galleries for these projects titled In Focus. These galleries provide photo essays of buildings, sites and precincts that I’ve spend a great deal of time documenting and need more than just a few photos to tell their story. The are often places of great significance and are exemplars of Tasmanian 20th Century Modernism that are still with us or a now a memory. Please enjoy browsing the galleries. You can follow the project on Instagram and Facebook
IN FOCUS - DOCUMENTARY PROJECTS
In Focus provides photo essays of buildings, sites and precincts relating to Tasmanian 20th Century Modernism. If there is a story to tell with more than a single photograph they live here.
Burnie Paper Mill
The former Burnie Paper Mill (Associated Pulp and Paper Mills Ltd) located in Burnie was one of the main employers of region. The mill started operations in the late 1930s and closed down in 2010. It was home to a wealth of wonderful Industrial buildings from the 1930s-1960s. Driving into Burnie the Burnie Paper Mill was a mighty impressive sight to behold, an industrial powerhouse, reminding one that you were now entering the industrial capital of the North-West. This project is close to my heart and I made many trips to document the Burnie Paper Mill before it was demolished. This project is ongoing in the sense that I have a large library of photographs that require editing As I process these images I will be adding them to this project gallery.
Woolsheds & Silos - Launceston
Launceston Woolsheds and Silos project explores the former industrial precinct located in the suburb of Invermay, Launceston before, during and after demolition. Over 10 years of documentation, this is a project close to my heart.
Launceston General Hospital
The former Streamline Art Deco Launceston General Hospital was a stunning example of design aesthetic in the Northern city of Launceston. Designed in the 1930s the hospital was in use up until the 1980s when the new (current) hospital was built opposite. For some time though both new and old hospitals were used in tandem until the new hospital was totally up and running- both the old and new were connected by a stunning piece of design engineering in the form of a suspension bridge that spanned Charles Street. Eventually the grand Art Deco hospital that was operational for nearly 50 years was permanently closed down and with it went the air bridge and the once modern hospital fell into disrepair.
Henty House
Henty House is one of the best examples of Brutalism in Tasmania, located in Launceston it serves as Government offices for the Tasmanian Government.
