About the photograph
This photographs forms part of a project documenting the abandoned Townsville General hospital as well as documenting the city of Townsville and its dramatic change. View the ongoing project gallery here. Townsville is often referred to as “the capital of North Queensland” I grew up here and have lived back here in different times of my life. In the 1990s the city had a population of around 100,000. 30 years later it's nearly 200,000. This project documents places and spaces I know and how Townsville is constantly changing. The Townsville hospital operated from the 1950s until the late 1990s when a new hospital was built. The hospital was abandoned for over a decade. It was recently converted into apartments. This photographs shows the hospital as it was in its abandoned state.
