About the photograph
Modern Hobart - the futuristic space age landmark that is the Railway Roundabout Water Fountain. Designed in the 1960s as part of an international design competition there were many entries but a local Hobart entry won the design competition. It has elements of what is known as Googie Architecture (think the Jetsons, UFOS, space-age). Officially opening in 1963 and sunken within the roundabout in which the precinct gets its name its a wonderful example of civic sculptural architecture. I can remember in the not too distant past when it was neglected and in a very poor state indeed. Thankfully in recent times the fountain has undergone substantial renovations and its lights and futuristic UFO vibe shines brightly once again. It makes me smile that its been carefully renovated as I had thought it could have easily gone the other way and been demolished like so much of our Modernist heritage. The sunken area has period concrete seats and a series of underpasses that connect you to the city, ABC TV studios and the swimming pool. These are adorned with period mosaic tiles too. Let's hope that more of our Modernist landmarks that abound throughout Tasmania can be protected in cherished in the same way as the Railway Roundabout has. A an interesting (or terrifying) side note is that the roundabout is the most accident prone in Tasmania having had around 1700 accidents over a period of decade!
